Flash Fiber Speed Test: What Speeds Should You Expect in Pakistan?
You've just had Flash Fiber installed — or you've had it a while and suspect your speeds aren't what they should be. Running a proper speed test and knowing how to read the results is the first step to confirming your connection is performing correctly.
How to Run a Flash Fiber Speed Test
For the most accurate results, follow these steps:
- Connect your laptop or desktop directly to the router using an ethernet cable — not WiFi
- Close all background applications: browsers, cloud sync apps, streaming services
- Visit speedtest.net or fast.com in your browser
- Run the test at least three times and note the average
Testing over WiFi introduces variables — signal strength, interference, device capability — that make results misleading. A wired test gives you the true performance of your fiber line.
Expected Speed Results by Package
| Package | Expected Wired Speed | Acceptable Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 20 Mbps | 18–20 Mbps | 16 Mbps |
| 30 Mbps | 27–30 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 50 Mbps | 45–50 Mbps | 40 Mbps |
| 100 Mbps | 90–100 Mbps | 80 Mbps |
| 300 Mbps | 270–300 Mbps | 240 Mbps |
Why Your Speed Might Be Lower Than Expected
Router Limitation
Older routers cap out at 50–100 Mbps throughput. If your router hardware can't handle your subscribed speed, it becomes the bottleneck regardless of what your fiber line delivers. Upgrading to a modern dual-band or WiFi 6 router resolves this instantly.
WiFi Distance and Interference
A 50 Mbps fiber connection may only deliver 25–35 Mbps over WiFi depending on distance from the router and neighbouring wireless networks. This is normal. Always test wired before concluding there is a connection problem.
Peak Hour Congestion
Minor speed dips of 10–15% during evening peak hours (8–11 PM) are normal on any broadband network. Consistent drops significantly below the acceptable minimums in the table above warrant a call to your dealer.
ONT or Fiber Cable Issue
A loose connector, dirty fiber splice, or damaged ONT can cause persistent underperformance. This requires a technician visit to diagnose. Your dealer can arrange this through PTCL's fault reporting system.
Understanding Ping in Your Speed Test
The ping result is just as important as download speed. On Flash Fiber, a ping of 10–25ms to a local server is normal and excellent. If your ping is consistently above 50ms on a fiber connection, there may be a routing or configuration issue worth investigating — especially if you use the connection for gaming or video calls.
What to Do If Speeds Are Consistently Low
- Power off both your ONT and router for 60 seconds
- Restart the ONT first, wait 2 minutes, then restart the router
- Re-run the wired speed test
- If still below the acceptable minimum, contact your dealer with your test results — screenshots of three consecutive tests are helpful
- Your dealer will log a fault with PTCL; a technician is typically dispatched within 24–48 hours
